Brooklyn-based indie artist Bess Rogers has had a lifetime fascination with evolution. But it wasn't until 4 years of nonstop touring and three independent releases, that the science of life began to creep it's way into her songs. Her sophomore record, aptly titled Out Of The Ocean, is a bold step forward for Rogers, and one that she has been eager to take.

During a rare few months off of touring (Bess tours not only for her own music, but as a lead guitarist and back up singer for indie-pop artist, Ingrid Michaelson), she decided to hibernate in her Brooklyn home and write a new a new record. In between working on the songs, she picked up a book called "Your Inner Fish" by Neil Shubin. "The book is about our evolution from life as far back as pre-historic fish and microbes and how that has affected our bodies and our lives now. It really grabbed me and I found myself a bit obsessed. I started to look at everything we do in life as a product of evolution, and many of the songs on this record were inspired by that idea."

Track Name: "One Step Free" - Bess Rogers
One step out of the ocean,
One step free,
One foot in front of the other,
From the sea.
Lonely, born to be
One step out of the ocean that bore me.
Track Name: "Standing Tall" - Bess Rogers
I'm standing tall in the rain and the snow,
Got a little bit of love, oh to keep me, to keep me dry.
So bring on the storm, let the winter winds blow,
My little bit of love, oh will keep me alive.

When I fall down to my knees,
When I fall down to the floor,
When I fall down to my knees,
You'll catch me.

Where is my faith? Well I need nothing more,
Than a little bit of love, oh to give me a reason why.
So bring on the storm, let the winter winds blow,
My little bit of love, oh will keep alive.

When I fall down to my knees,
When I fall down to the floor,
When I fall down to my knees,
You'll catch me.
Track Name: "Weak Link" - Bess Rogers
I tried to change but all I did was spin in place.
It's so much easier just to stay the same.
Could you love me like this,
Will all these broken pieces?

Cause if you always to, then I'll never get better.
If I have you,

[chorus]
I'll be your weak link,
Holding everything back.
Yeah your weak link,
Making everyone mad.
I'll be the lost cause,
You don't want to give up,
I'll be the weak link,
You can't help but love.

I watch myself do the things that I hate.
I watch my body disobey.
Could you forgive my flaws,
Even with the pain they cause?

Cause if you always do,
Then I'll never get better,
If I have you,

[repeat chorus]

Holding me up keeps you down,
Ties your love to the ground,
What you could be if you'd let go of me.

[repeat chorus]
Track Name: "Math and Science"
I hear the pulsing in my brain telling me to love.
I feel my DNA push and shove.
I feel the chemical reactions building up.
I see the master plan in action, fooling us.
But no matter what the reason,

I can't help but like the feeling.
If it's all just math and science,
I will offer my compliance.
And now your lips approach mine, just like they said.
And all the thoughts I'm supposed to think, they flood my head.
And my heart beat races, and I know why.

Everything I do is to keep me alive.
But no matter what the reason,
I can't help but like the feeling.
If it's all just math and science,
I will offer my compliance.
Track Name: "Anchor" - Bess Rogers
Gravity feels weaker than it ever used to.
light as a feather, blown by the wind without you,
I float above all that I love and I can't get home,
Till you pull me back, you show me that I am not alone.

[chorus]
I need an anchor to hold me down,
Baby you keep my feet on the ground,
Don't let me float, don't let me float away.

When it turns to night, stars just fade into the darkness.
I'm lost in the tides, sailing without a compass.
Nothing to show which way to go, it all seems wrong.
Till you bring me back, you show me that I'm already home.

[repeat chorus}
I need a moon that'll calm the sea,
Baby you do the right thing for me,
Don't let me float, don't let me float away.

Honey you're the reason ,
That I get up when my knees are bleeding,
That I wake up when I'm lost and dreaming,
Yeah you bring me back.

Honey you're the reason ,
That I get up when my knees are bleeding,
That I wake up when I'm lost and dreaming,
Yeah you bring me back.

[repeat chorus]

[repeat chorus]
I need a moon that'll calm the sea,
Baby you do the right thing for me,
Don't let me float, don't let me float away.
Track Name: "In The Waves" - Bess Rogers (featuring Ingrid Michaelson and Allie Moss)
Under the water there's nothing but blue,
Surrounding me, surrounding you.
We'll just have each other, in this deep dark world,
Fingers clasped, with your mermaid girl.

Everything that hurt you up above will drift away.
The only thing you'll need is our love.
We'll live in the waves.

Under the water you won't feel cold,
You won't feel pain, you'll never grow old.
We'll just have each other, in this deep dark world,
Till the end of time, with your mermaid girl.

Everything that hurt you up above will drift away.
The only thing you'll need is our love.
We'll live in the waves.
Track Name: "Water and Dirt" - Bess Rogers
I used to see the sky as a black hole,
I tried to close my eyes to feel less alone.
Now that I've found you, all the stars have come out, all the stars have come
out.
Now when I look up to see the milky way,
I understand life in a new way,
Now that I've found you, I know what it's about, I know what it's about.

And I can't go back.
No I can't go back.

[chorus]
Water and Dirt, water and dirt,
That's what we're made of.
You told me one night, and I realized,
What I was afraid of.
It's all gonna end the same way it starts,
So why don't I let you into my heart?

I used to think about infinity,
And my head hurt from the thought that we,
Are such a small piece of a small piece of a small piece.

Then you showed me how to laugh about,
All the big things, and focus on right now.
Inside your arms, it's only you and me, it's only you and me.

And I can't go back.
No I can't go back.

[repeat chorus]

I'm not afraid of it anymore.

[repeat chorus]

So why don't I let you into my heart?
Track Name: "The Fittest" - Bess Rogers
This is how your meant to be,
A slave who believes you're free,
To fix mother nature's mistakes.
You try to give back but you always take
What you want, what you need,
I don't blame you.

Where would you be now?
Where would you be now?
Where would you be now, without me?

Safe in the home of the fittest,
I know you don't like to admit it,
But it feels good to be at the top,
Cry all you want but you'll never stop,
To give back what you have,
I don't blame you.

Where would you be now?
Where would you be now?
Where would you be now, without me?

I've seen places where no one is safe,
You'd be down on your knees.
If you were defending your life,
You'd be begging me please,
Come save me.

This is how you're meant to be,
A slave who's believes you're free,
To live how you want,
You forget it didn't come easy.

Where would you be now without me?
Track Name: "I'll Be Gone" - Bess Rogers
You used to leap out of your chair,
When I walked in through the door.
Now I'm the last in a long line,
Of people you have no use for.

Well I've been waiting here so patient,
For a sign of life.

If you don't want me, want me, want me anymore,
Tell me what did I do wrong?
If you don't need me, need me, need me anymore,
Then I'll be gone.

I'd seen the best, I knew the worst,
The things you never would reveal.
Now there's a wall that I can't climb,
Why won't you tell me how you feel?

Well I remember we were better,
Than you care to say.

If you don't want me, want me, want me anymore,
Tell me what did I do wrong?
If you don't need me, need me, need me anymore,
Then I'll be gone.

I'll be gone, I'll be gone, I'll be gone, I'll be gone,
I've been hanging around and it's pathetic.

If you don't want me, want me, want me anymore,
Tell me what did I do wrong?
If you don't need me, need me, need me anymore,
Then I'll be gone.

I've been hanging around it's pathetic.
Track Name: "Second Chance" - Bess Rogers
I think about the one I left,
It's been many long years.
And now I see with my last breathe,
I could have made my home here,
With you.

I always saw the road ahead,
Dreamt of a distance skyline.
Now all I have is in this bed,
And for the first time,
I'm right here.

Give me a second chance, second chance, second chance,
To make amends, make amends, make amends.
I know that I would do what's right,
With a second chance, second chance, second chance at this life.
Track Name: "Brick By Brick" - Bess Rogers
Three steps forward and two steps back we go,
You try and push harder, they push right back, I know,
That time moves fast and change moves painfully slow.
It's hard to see the shift when you're so close.

Brick by brick, we are building.
You won't see for the longest time,
We're building a new life.

You plant a seed and wait for it to grow.
They hate it now but they're too scared to know,
That their children's children will sit underneath it's shade,
And their children's children will bask in the love you made.

Brick by brick, we are building.
You won't see for the longest time,
We're building a new life.
It won't show for the longest time,
